Twenty-five great tracks of 2007

Although this is obviously a list that's going to fluctuate like a broken flux capacitor with every passing second, here are my 25 favourite tracks of the year.

Thanks to the devilry of the internet, you should also be able to listen to each of the songs on the music player below (thanks James), except for the Jim'll's Brain track, because his song is too obscure to be downloadable online (you can, however, listen to it here).

  • Paper Planes – MIA
  • Intervention – Arcade Fire
  • Candylion – Gruff Rhys
  • Burning - The Whitest Boy Alive
  • Golden Skans – Klaxons

Nice list there young man!

I've only heard 13 of them I think, but I absolutely love 12 of those. The other is Mika.

VERY impressed to see the Ting Tings there, when I first heard that song a few months ago it was impossible to find it anywhere. Although I remember it sounding different back then.

Can I offer up - Los Campesinos! "You! Me! Dancing!" as a late contender for the list?

Ah, the first of the Mika complaints. I think that Ting Tings song is my favourite, I can't get enough of it.

I've heard the Los Campesinos! song and found it very strange. But I'm sure I'll love it after a few more listens. Sort of Delgados-ish, right?

I don't have enough Delgados experience to confirm that, but you could be right.

I've spent the last hour or so making my own list:-

Paper Planes – MIA
Jimmy - MIA
You! Me! Dancing! - Los Campesinos!
We Throw Parties, You Throw Knives - Los Campesinos!
Run Away - Super Furry Animals
Keep the Car Running – Arcade Fire
Say It Right - Nelly Furtado
Your Love Alone Is Not Enough – Manic Street Preachers
Icky Thump – The White Stripes
Smokers Outside Hospital Doors – Editors
Charmer - Kings of Leon
Kate Nash - Birds
House Of Cards – Radiohead
Foo Fighters - Long Road to Ruin
Down Boy - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Blood Red Shoes - It's getting boring by the sea
Silversun Pickups - Little Lovers So Polite
Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip - That Shalt Always Kill
You're Not Alone - The Enemy
Gyrru Gyrru Gyrru – Gruff Rhys
Hot - Avril Lavigne*
Adele - Hometown Glory
Tambourine - Eve
Machines - Biffy Clyro
Folding Stars - Biffy Clyro

*My Avril is your Mika

I've had a root around for other peoples top 2007 songs, LCD soundsytem appear at the top of many lists - I've not heard anything from them before, I'm in the process of rectifying that though.

Get their second album NOW. It's top 5 in pretty much everyone's list. Funnily enough, I had House Of Cards in mine, but I changed it to 15 Step at the last minute.

Is that Gruff Rhys one the 14-minute effort? If yes, well done, it's a cracker.

The 14min Gruff track is "Skylon!" - I'm sure there's a whiff of a Gomez track in there. Gyrru is a Welsh language track - I guess it helps if you know what the lyrics mean!

I stood next to Gruff during a gig on Thursday, but was too much in awe to talk to him (for about an hour).

Seconded on the Ting Tings. John T has been playing that down BSL all year - new single not bad either. It's the new 'Decepticon' - a bit more exposure and you can see it being around clubs for years.

It's just one of those tunes you want to email everybody to tell them about isn't it?

Thanks for putting them up. North American Scum got a pathetic amount of airplay, despite being their 2nd most radio-friendly song.

Boooo to Manic Street Preachers, who used to be oh so fucking great and are now a sack of cunts.

In retrospect you were right. Candylion was a very good song, and probably gave birth to Noah and the Whale.

It was also this historic blog post that turned MIA's Paper Planes and The Ting Tings' That's Not My Name into massive breakout hit singles...
